About the work

Looking carefully
is a way of listening.

Neil Wildin, photojournalist and writer

I am a photojournalist and writer working across documentary photography and long-form essays. I am interested in how we experience public life, how stories are shaped, and how a change in viewpoint changes what we can see.

The Act of Looking, made during a public demonstration on Avenida Paulista in São Paulo, asks what it means to photograph people who are themselves watching and recording. In that work, I consider a photograph both as a record of what stood before the camera and as an interpretation shaped by where I chose to stand.

In The Changing Burden of the Image, I examine what happens when a photograph moves beyond the moment in which it was taken. Captions, editorial selection, publication context and new audiences can alter what an image appears to say. The photograph may remain the same, but its purpose can change. I am interested in where evidence ends, where interpretation begins, and how responsibility continues as photographs circulate.

Alongside my photography, I am developing VISUS — The Discipline of Seeing, the second volume of The Seven, a wider series of inquiries into human life. VISUS asks how we see the world: what attracts our attention, what we overlook, and what changes when we look again. This site brings together my stories from the field and the questions beneath them.
